Anne P Murphy - SJAA Trustee 2002-2020

Ann joined the Trustees of St Joseph’s African Aid in October 2002. The Trustees at that time consisted of 4 Josephites and it was clearly time to seek Trustees beyond our little group. Martin Knops and Ann Murphy were approached and both agreed to join the Trustees. It was also time to put an end to the all male presence on the Board.

Ann’s many years as Matron at St George’s College meant that she knew the other Trustees very well. Her presence on the Board of Trustees went some way to offset the male presumptions of the other members. It is easily forgotten that Ann was alone in presenting a woman’s point of view. It was many years before she was joined by Joan and Samantha.

Her medical expertise and the experience of her visits to the Gambia were of value to SJAA. At that time we were endeavouring to set up a properly equipped medical centre in Bulongo and Ann played an important role in helping us avoid making some medical mistakes.

Those were the early days of SJAA. We were inexperienced but enthusiastic. We had lots of laughs. Ann’s mischievous sense of humour stopped us taking ourselves too seriously. Little did we realise that SJAA would develop into the small but efficient charity it is today.

Ann has not only been a valued Trustee, she has also been an important donor. Her generosity has helped change lives of many people in Africa. Ann has given SJAA a sense of continuity and her probing questions from time to time have made us think.
